Maximising the utility of an infotainment system

Creating an effective infotainment system requires updated and varied content and a CMS which makes it easy and cost-effective to present the right content in the right time and place.

Easy and flexible location-based triggering

Real time information and disruption information is by nature connected with different places and GeoSignage makes it easy to distribute information connected with specific areas, lines and stops. To create a new hotspot, the user only needs to draw a zone in the map tool and connect a playlist to the zone. The level of detail in the location-based triggering can be changed gradually, and also vary between different content providers.

Dynamic playback adaptation

When a part of the content is location-based, it is no longer possible to use static loops of content; location-based content has to be prioritised. The channel can also have different goals, e.g. frequency and quota, for different content categories. GeoSignage dynamically chooses what media object to play next, taking into account priorities and goals. Afterwards, the user can see when and where media was played and to what extent goals are met.

User-friendly, cost-efficient administration

Creating playlists, and connecting them with places, events and time templates, is a configuration which is probably made a few times per year, e.g. in conjunction with timetable changes. The day-to-day administration is about uploading and adding media to playlists.

With content that changes every month, week or even more often, it is necessary that the administration of the infotainment system does not require technicians. The goal with GeoSignage has been to enable a flexible triggering of infotainment, while keeping the day-to-day administration as simple as possible.

GeoSignage CMS is administered through a web application, which the user accesses via a web browser. With a modern, user-friendly design, GeoSignage CMS gives communicators, marketers, salespeople and traffic controllers control over the channel. When these people, who know what passengers want, can control the infotainment system, it becomes an effective communication channel.

Works with displays and mobile devices

The major parts in GeoSignage CMS are the user interface, and the onboard media selector. The user interface is the web application where the user manages what is played, and when and where. The media selector is a small application onboard the vehicle, running on a gateway or media computer, responsible for choosing the right information to distribute at any given moment. Receivers of this information can be a display or a passenger’s personal device. The media selector returns logs with playback history, which can be visualised in the user interface.

The synchronisation between the user interface and the media selector takes place automatically when there is an Internet connection, and can be directed to certain times and places. For location-based triggering, the media selector requires a positioning signal, usually from a GPS. The system can also take into account odometer, door opening and stop signals. All media is stored locally, and therefore infotainment can be played in the right time and place, without continuous Internet connection.
