GeoSignage is a Content Management System, tailor-made for infotainment systems in public transport. Buses, trains, trams, stations and stops are equipped with displays at a larger extent. More often, passengers carry with them their personal smart phone, tablet or laptop. GeoSignage CMS is the intelligent software that turns the displays and the passenger’s mobile devices into an effective communication channel.
Built to meet the needs of the different actors in public transport
Passengers want to get real time information and disruption information, in order to get smoothly from point A to point B. Passengers also appreciate news and entertainment, which makes the trip feel shorter. The public transport actors can use infotainment systems to meet these wishes, and increase passenger satisfaction and revenues.
Specifically, GeoSignage offers its customers to:
- Operators: Meet tender requirements for distribution of passenger information. Offer an IT-platform with a tested infotainment-application. Increase revenues by marketing transport services.
- Out-of-Home Media Companies: Switch from paper to digital advertisements. Increase the yield from current Digital Signage. Manage the whole digital network with one system. Sell different spot lengths, location-based campaigns and Share of Voice. Generate the proof-of-play statistics that advertisers want.
- Public Transport Authorities: Increase passenger satisfaction by keeping passengers well-informed and shortening the experienced travel time. Co-finance the public transport by leasing advertising space on the displays. Promote increased ridership by marketing transport services.
- System integrators and hardware suppliers: Meet tender requirements for CMS for infotainment. Increase revenues by expanding the product portfolio, without developing a proprietary CMS. Keep focus on the companies’ core competencies and let GeoSignage meet the constantly increasing demands on advanced control over the infotainment.

Maximising the utility of an infotainment system
Creating an effective infotainment system requires updated and varied content and a CMS which makes it easy and cost-effective to present the right content in the right time and place.
Easy and flexible location-based triggering
Real time information and disruption information is by nature connected with different places and GeoSignage makes it easy to distribute information connected with specific areas, lines and stops. To create a new hotspot, the user only needs to draw a zone in the map tool and connect a playlist to the zone. The level of detail in the location-based triggering can be changed gradually, and also vary between different content providers.
Dynamic playback adaptation
When a part of the content is location-based, it is no longer possible to use static loops of content; location-based content has to be prioritised. The channel can also have different goals, e.g. frequency and quota, for different content categories. GeoSignage dynamically chooses what media object to play next, taking into account priorities and goals. Afterwards, the user can see when and where media was played and to what extent goals are met.
User-friendly, cost-efficient administration
Creating playlists, and connecting them with places, events and time templates, is a configuration which is probably made a few times per year, e.g. in conjunction with timetable changes. The day-to-day administration is about uploading and adding media to playlists.
With content that changes every month, week or even more often, it is necessary that the administration of the infotainment system does not require technicians. The goal with GeoSignage has been to enable a flexible triggering of infotainment, while keeping the day-to-day administration as simple as possible.
GeoSignage CMS is administered through a web application, which the user accesses via a web browser. With a modern, user-friendly design, GeoSignage CMS gives communicators, marketers, salespeople and traffic controllers control over the channel. When these people, who know what passengers want, can control the infotainment system, it becomes an effective communication channel.
Works with displays and mobile devices
The major parts in GeoSignage CMS are the user interface, and the onboard media selector. The user interface is the web application where the user manages what is played, and when and where. The media selector is a small application onboard the vehicle, running on a gateway or media computer, responsible for choosing the right information to distribute at any given moment. Receivers of this information can be a display or a passenger’s personal device. The media selector returns logs with playback history, which can be visualised in the user interface.
The synchronisation between the user interface and the media selector takes place automatically when there is an Internet connection, and can be directed to certain times and places. For location-based triggering, the media selector requires a positioning signal, usually from a GPS. The system can also take into account odometer, door opening and stop signals. All media is stored locally, and therefore infotainment can be played in the right time and place, without continuous Internet connection.
“When I first came in contact with GeoSignage, Karlstadsbuss had been looking for a long time for a partner, who could create and deliver an infotainment system, which both improves passenger information and contributes to shortening the perceived travel time. GeoSignage’s system has in all ways both met and exceeded expectations, and the software has shown itself to be very reliable. We have received only positive reactions from our customers, and the system has activated the passengers, who are contributing with content. This strengthens the communication with customers and contributes to a good relation. More and more, customers as well as their friends and acquaintances, are positive to Karlstadsbuss, which contributes to increased patronage. GeoSignage lives up to its promises and has proven to be a reliable partner, who is easy to cooperate with.”
– Sören Bergerland, Head, Karlstadsbuss
“Planning media through GeoSignage user interface is user-friendly, comprehensible and, most of all, operationally reliable. The simplicity makes the work efficient and fun. The workflow between the views is smartly laid out and creates a speedy administration for the user. After many years’ experience of different broadcasting systems, GeoSignage is by far the most stable and safest system.”
– Rickard Alström, Film Agency Make My Day
“The launch in Karlstad has worked very well, thanks to a great engagement from all parties involved. The displays are large, well-placed and bright, which gives an excellent visibility. The channel stands out in the media noise by having a relevant content, including for example passenger information, news, sports and weather, which is appreciated by both passengers and advertisers. Many advertisers have also combined Bus-TV with regular TV-advertising, something that has given clear synergies.
Those who have advertised have experienced a positive effect and we see that the interest is increasing all the time. A digital channel creates new communication possibilities compared to traditional bus advertising, for example it is possible to direct different messages to different times of the day, and also to customise the message depending on where the bus is located, which is a technology GeoSignage provides in Karlstad. This leads to new marketing opportunities and increased demand, which in turn leads to increased revenue.”
